"So what will happen with this one, Nannie?" Said a wide eyed little girl. Her hair shone like a strike of fire in the midmorning sun. Alyson was energetic and full of smiles as an eight year old with a fondness for her grandmother. When she was born, her mother had died. It could have been a sad event, but Nannie Pratt was always there to take care of her. Alyson's father had died as well. A young man, working as a pilot had lost his plane five months before she was born. Despite the adversity, Alyson grew up with her Nannie and loved her.

Nannie Pratt was always energized by the spunkiness of her granddaughter. Being the mother of Alyson's mother she always knew there was a deeper, maternal, bond. "Strawberry, my dear," the old woman started, using a nickname she had found endearing, "this bubbling cauldron will make mystical butterflies."

The little girl's eyes grew wider as she listened intently to her Nannie. Nannie Pratt would make these small spells to tantalize the imagination of her granddaughter. After the day had been done, and simple spells on the side, she would put her little Strawberry to bed and practice the real deal.

The cauldron bubbled and belched a few small butterflies. They were a streak of rainbows on the morning air.

That was the morning that I remember the most. It was spring time in Maine. Even spring in Maine was cold. I was one day away from being nine years old. One day away from my first year with the magic. I would go through puberty as a nine year old. Puberty is always a prime time for the witches, when a young girl gets her period, she is channeling magical energy on a massive level. She walks closer to the realm of power than any man could. I think that's why Nannie found it so special that she was my mother's mother. The maternal lineage always carried the heritage of a witch. Dear, Hecate, what a bright morning that was. What a bright morning it was as a normal little girl.

Today was a special day. Little Alyson was turning nine. Soon she would need more than her fingers to show people her age. Nannie Pratt had taken her into town for lunch. Alyson sat at her table, high above the floor, little legs swinging. She and Nannie has shared a big basket of fish sticks. Fish sticks. What child wasn't in love with fish sticks?

It was now after dinner time. Nannie had made her little Strawberry, with bright read hair, a simple little dinner with a small little chocolate cake. Alyson loved chocolate cake. Once again, her deep green eyes grew as wide as the full moon outside when she dug into her sweet cake.

Nannie Pratt shuffled back to a cupboard where she pulled down two items. She brought them over to her granddaughter and waited patiently for her attention.

I was never so excited in my whole life. I really mean it. Nannie gave me two of the greatest gifts ever. The first gift was her old burlap rucksack. It seemed ragged, but I knew it was a trick. Nannie was the best witch I will ever have had the chance to know. She made that rucksack to be bigger on the inside than on the outside. The interior seems almost infinite. I still use that rucksack.

I remember as a young girl, running through the farmers market and spending my nickels and dimes on apples and other fruit and watching them fall into that bag. They were like nothing. Then, when I wanted to eat one, I would just have to think about what it was I wanted from the bag and it would give it back.

The second gift was this book. It's beautiful. Made from mahogany died leather, she said it was full of magic itself. The leather was from a fawn. A young deer that was sacrificed to bring new magics and a wellspring of power. The pages were handmade, and as my Nannie preferred, imported from Italy.

Nearly as soon as I saw this book, it was taken from me. She put it on the mantle above the fireplace and reminded me that I needed to be older before I could ever use it. Now I am using it.

Later that night, before bed, and after the late dessert, Nannie took me under the full moon. She had drawn a large circle on the ground, complete with pentagram. The four candles were lit. She opened the circle first by calling the four elements:

"Circulus apertus est, sed perpetua,
In pace deae
Ite in córdibus vestris,
Lorem dignum et alacer parte.
Et iterum conveniant velit. Benedictus."

She then called on you, Hecate, and asked to bless me, her grandchild. I was still her sweet little Strawberry, but was was about to happen changed my life forever. In an instant, my hair was jet black. My eyes were blacked like two deep pools. Nightmares ran through my mind, and I sat in utter fear. Before I knew it, it was over. My hair ran white and my eyes began to glow. Euphoria was abounding in my mind. It ran wild until, suddenly, it was over. My sweet red hair came back.

Nannie told me I had just received the Wound of the Witch. I was now a real witch. My training would soon follow.

"Alyson, Dear!" Shouted Nannie Pratt from the dining table to a now thirteen year old Alyson. Alyson was in her room. The cottage was small, but she did have her own room. It was nearly bare with the exception of a shelf with books and her desk, as well as her favorite stuffed bunny. Or bear. Or whatever it was. She called him George. Alyson never was sure what George was, but he was hers.

"Coming, Nannie!" Alyson shouted, running a brush through her hair. She sat the brush down on her desk, and peered into her hand mirror. Alyson set the mirror down and left the room. The young girl had been training witchcraft for four years. She never had the chance to make anything on her own. To this day, her thirteenth birthday, she had been only able to help her grandmother work on her magics. Unknown to Alyson, today things would change.

So after four years of training, four long years with the rucksack, Nannie gave me new things for my birthday. I received my own chalk, for circles. I even got four candles and a lighter, blessed of course. On top of that I got my own athame, a blade for cutting herbs.

Nannie taught me how to make potions that day. I was very good at it, having the skills from the four years of helping her. My first potion she called Sleepy Tea. She gave me the scroll with the spell on it and told me to add it to my book someday. The tea turned out great. It makes someone fall asleep practically in an instant. I foolishly tried some a few weeks later and slept for most of a day. Along with it, I received a scroll for a healing potion. I hadn't tried it a the time.

Though the potions were exciting, more fulfilling than most thirteen year olds girls could ask for, there was some bad news. Nannie informed me that evening that we would be moving to Munich, Germany, within five days. I was devastated. Maine was so beautiful.

The girl hadn't adjusted well. Alyson still missed the cottage in Maine. She hardly knew a drop of courage, and over the month she hadn't made any friends. It could have just been the emotions of a girl on the verge of being a teenager. She disregarded the feelings, though. She learned how to enchant this afternoon. Nannie Pratt had given her another scroll. She had forged her first enchanted ring. It was called, "Grant Courage" and Alyson had promised to wear it always. The ring would bring her courage in fearful times.

Sure the ring was nice, and I was excited to learn Enchanting, but that evening was special for another reason. Around ten, I saw Nannie fiddling with a strange item. I couldn't see the item, though, it was covered by a black, velvet, cloth. She seemed secretive over it. Nannie never kept secrets from me.

It wasn't too long until she shut the item in a box and left it be. I was thirteen, what was I supposed to do? I got snoopy and looked inside. I daintily removed the cloth and saw something that I could hardly imagine. There was a skull in the box. It wasn't just any skull. It was made completely of crystal. I'm aware that crystal has some significant technological and magic properties and I was in awe. I reached into the box and I touched it. My mind flashed with a hideous vision. But I was not afraid. (I attribute that to the ring) I saw mankind. I saw mankind dying.

The lid slammed shut and I was looking at Nannie. She was rarely angry with me. When she was, she reverted to calling me Alyson Pratt instead of Strawberry. She shouted at me to never look in that box. I would be a few years later until she ever explained why.

Today was Alyson's fifteenth birthday. She had known the name Hecate. In fact, she had known the name all her life. Today she would learn of her ninth year becoming. She would learn of her Wound.

"Hecate is our Goddess. It is important that you remember her name. There is only one God above her. That God is also a Goddess. We do not speak the high Goddess's name. For your sake, I will not teach it to you. Hecate opens our souls to the sources of all magic. She is the birth and the spring, the mother and the hunter, the plants and the animals. The high Goddess is life. The high Goddess is death. We can access these doors through Hecate. She is your Goddess now, my Strawberry," spoke Nannie Pratt, "no masculine incarnation can overpower her. Not even Ra."

I listened with great intent to my next special birthday gift. It was almost as special to me as learning what I would next. Nannie finished her lesson and retreated to the back of the shop. She opened a safe with a key. I found that odd. A key, not a spell. Inside the safe was that box, the one with the skull. She opened the box. She proceeded to remove the velvet. She even used the velvet to remove the skull from the box. "You must never touch it," she said.

After letting me stare into it for a while, she began to tell me what it was. It wasn't just any old crystal skull. It was a Crystal Skull. One tied to an ancient prophecy. A prophecy she warned me would come true. It was outside the realm of the lower Gods and Goddesses and had said the high Goddess had no intention of intervening. This would be an apocalypse that mankind would have to survive themselves. Worst yet, she didn't know the whole story. Nannie said that those who touched it would only be stricken with great fear and flashes of our horrifying demise.

I could hardly handle the input. It was at this moment that she said something I will never forget. She said: "Alyson, we are here to protect the skull. One day you will have to protect this skull. Keep it out of the hands of evil. We will forever hide it, until we can find one who can understand it."

I asked her what if no one good came to interpret it and she hurriedly shushed me and put it back in the box. She then hid it away in the safe. I was worried at her response, it was so sudden. Nannie Pratt then returned and told me that we were summoned here. Hecate, you brought us here. She said that you came to her in a dream. You told her that Himler, the Nazi, had discovered this skull in the nineteen-forties and that he hid it here, in Minuch. You brought us here to find it and protect it. That was our job. That was my job.

Alyson was nineteen. Her birthdays had come, her birthdays had gone. She grew up, a pretty girl from Maine. A fine young woman with deep green eyes and strawberry hair. An American teen trapped in Munich, Germany.

Nannie Pratt hadn't been feeling well for the last year. She was growing brittle in her old age. Alyson did her best to care for her grandmother. Being an adult herself, Nannie Pratt had taught Alyson how to run the Apothecary. The Apothecary wasn't the truest apothecary. This day in age, the place was mostly a New Age store. Grandmother and granddaughter had a small cluster of customers who came in to buy spell books, herbal guides and many other supplies. On this particular morning, Alyson was preparing Courage rings and Sleepy Tea potions.

It made the young woman comfortable knowing that she wouldn't run out of herbs. Nannie had hired a German man named Erik to deliver them a fresh supply of herbs twice every week. Erik was a local farmer. His wife, Sadie, was interested in witchcraft and had a large garden. It bloomed with herbs and flowers. More than Sadie could use herself. In tern for some money and supplies for his wife, Erik gave the Apothecary cheap herbs.

Standing over her cauldron, Alyson gave a half an hour to make four items. Two Teas and two rings. She said each incantation.

"Hecate, Labiatae, Scutellaria, Lateriflora quisque orci in medicina."

She then moves to her circle and opens it, lighting each of the four candles properly.

"Circulus apertus est, sed perpetua,
In pace deae
Ite in córdibus vestris,
Lorem dignum et alacer parte.
Et iterum conveniant velit. Benedictus."

Alyson places the ring in the circle and chants, "Hecate, deam, hoc est summa virtus."

I had managed to make one of either that day. I don't think I'll ever forget it. I failed as equally as I succeeded. The big downfall of magic is that there is no instant gratification. It took the whole half hour regardless of failure. I wrote my notes in the store log and closed the circle. The Apothecary had been slow that day. I decided to head upstairs to our living quarters. What I was about to behold would change my life entirely.

Turning into Nannie's room, I saw her laying asleep on her bed. I went to her side and knelt down. She wasn't breathing. I checked her pulse. Her heart wasn't breathing. My Nannie had passed away. I broke into tears and wept. Know one should have to die alone. I knew that the high Goddess would bring her into the heavenly realm, but I wept.

Suddenly, there was a warmth. I looked from my Nannie's chest to the foot of the bed. There she stood, as if solid. She was not alone. She stood next to you, Hecate. You were beautiful. She was beautiful. She looked like she did that day she gave me the Wound of the Witch. Her words resounded in my mind as well in the room:

"My sweet, sweet, Strawberry. I am moving on now, from this world into the next. Hecate will be leading me to the gates of the high Goddess. I want you now to take over the Apothecary. Take down your Book of Shadows from the mantle and start writing in it. Start your true relationship with Hecate."

She and you smiled at one another and you took her hand as the two of you began to fade. I told her I loved her. She called me Strawberry one last time. Take care of her Hecate.

My name is Alyson Pratt. I was born on March 24, 1986. My father died before I was born, and I was given my mother's last name. My grandmother raised me. I am a witch. My patron Goddess is Hecate. on my ninth birthday I became a real witch. I worked with my Nannie, my grandmother, on spells until I was thirteen. I was let to work alone at fifteen. Also at fifteen I was allowed to work in our small magic shop, the Apothecary. Eleven days ago Nannie Pratt passed away and I inherited the Apothecary. Today, something frightening happened.

This morning I received a knock on my door....

11:00 AM CET
Two hours earlier.

There was a knock on the Apothecary's back door. As usual, it was the mail. There had been cards for Nannie and bills to pay. Alyson opened the door and greeted the jolly mailman. He was robust. In fact, Alyson was certain that he could have been Santa. His facial hair was too dark, and too short, but he could have been Santa. To make matters worse, the poor man's name was Hans Hanson.

"Good morning, Alyson." Said Hans with his arms full with boxes, "You computer has arrived."

"Thanks," Alyson said, slightly taken aback by the two large boxes.

"I hope things are well for you, my dear," Hans said, "I know it's tough, but you'll do well. Those who knew her really loved your grandmother."

"Thanks again, Hans," Alyson said, gritting her teeth slightly, "Everyone's been so kind. Have a good day."

Hans had taken leave. Alyson retreated to her counter and opened the boxes. She had already set up internet, but had never been that used to using machines. Magic was the way of her world. Even worse, when she was forced to use them in school they were Windows. Alyson bought a Mac. She had heard they were better.

After a few frustrating minutes, she was online. Perhaps she's hire some unwitting American to make the store a website. For now she would look for viable recipes. She found a bundle of three and ordered them right away.

She then set up her cauldron and smiled into the bubbling water.

"Today I need Eucalyptus." Alyson muttered, dropping in a bit of the herb as she started her incantation. It would take ten minutes to make two.

"Hecate, Myrtaceae, Eucalyptu, Globulus quisque orci in medicina."

She was running low on Courage rings. They were a hot item in today's economy. Moving to her circle, she lit her candles in order and chanted:

"Circulus apertus est, sed perpetua,
In pace deae
Ite in córdibus vestris,
Lorem dignum et alacer parte.
Et iterum conveniant velit. Benedictus."

The circle now open she placed in her first ring. It would take forty minutes to make four of them. She hoped that each would succeed.

I failed making all four rings work. I have to admit that Enchantments are not my strong suit. I did manage to make both potions, though. I hope that sales will go well this afternoon. The usuals start to show around 3:00 and I suspect that the superstitious will start buying supplies to ensure a good harvest this fall. Hecate, in your name I ask for your guidance.

Alyson was waiting near her door this time. Her tracking information had said that her package was en route. What could this grab bag of spells be?

Hans walked up to the little door of the Apothecary. Before he could tap his knuckles on the door Alyson had opened it.

"Good morning, Hans," Alyson said, she seemed happier than she had in days past.

"Guten morgen," Hans said. He then stopped himself and approached in English, "Good morning, Miss Pratt, how are you?"

"I'm all right. You know I've been meaning to get my German down. I'm much better at my Latin, though." Alyson pushed a smile across her cheeks. She brushed her red hair aside.

Hans smiled. He removed her mail from his bag. "You've got these," he handed over a few letters, "And this package." Hans concluded, handing a small poster tube over to Alyson.

"Thank you, Hans," Alyson said. She gripped her mail tightly and closed the door. There were days she could almost be certain she was Christian. It was as if she could hear him laughing like that jolly old elf. She shook her head and proceeded to her counter.

The computer had been set up for a few days now. On top of that, she had already set up her cauldron and an open circle. Alyson was pretty excited to see what was inside the tube.

I popped the plastic cork off one end of the tube and shook out the recipes. I unrolled them and read each one. They read in order: Vorpal Sword Enchantment, Render Bleeding Potion and Diarrhetic Drink. Diarrhetic Drink? I read over the recipe and it seems it is an instantaneous laxative. I could sell it, of course. New Age customers prefer a natural solution to all of their problems. Even bowl obstruction.

Vorpal Sword is an enchantment that seems very useful. It turns an amulet into a barrier of protection. In reality, it turns all attacking weapons into flowers. It was labeled as a Green Enchantment. I had heard of this before, from my Nannie. Green spells were always the best. They brought the user closer to the light of you, the Goddess. They were far more sought out than Neutral Spells.

Render Bleeding causes the person who drinks it to bleed profusely from the mouth, eyes and nose. This potion as well as the Diarrhetic Drink are called Black Spells. They bring the caster closer to the darker side of the magical realm. They are dangerous. I have heard that there are those out there who seek to collect and destroy all Dark Spell. But there are also many out there who wish to protect them and use them for evil. Nannie had always told me that Dark Spells weren't necessarily evil, but that I should tread carefully.

Regardless, I decided to attempt to make a few of each. Render Bleeding required Alfalfa and the Diarrhetic Drink require Myrrh, Coriander and Ginko. I set the herbs aside and decided to calm myself and attempt some Enchantments first. The circle was open and I started with Courage Rings. I needed to try to make two of them.

"Hecate, deam, hoc est summa virtus."

Closing the circle, I then moved to the potions. I wanted to make two of each. I started with the Diarrhetic Drink.

It took more than an hour and I failed each Enchantment. I would have complained about my shortcomings, but I had a stranger experience. I felt something dark pulse within my soul. I felt it when I had my success with the drink and the Render Bleeding potion. As each success came, I could the darkness welling up inside me. When I was finished, I had noticed that my hair had begun to turn black. What could it be? Was it my Wound of the Witch? I was relieved when it wore off in twenty minutes. No customers had noticed it.

Alyson was ever frustrated with her computer. She had hired a guy in America named Lex to build her a website. It looked great and it ran well, but she knew nothing about operating it. Luckily, Lex was well versed and took close care of her. She was feeling a bit guilty too. She wasn't that good at Enchantments she hadn't had a big stock on her website.

Alyson sighed, lighting her candles and opening her circle. Today she needed five Courage Rings and five Vorpal Sword amulets. She had even closed the shop today to make sure she wasn't interrupted.

"Circulus apertus est, sed perpetua,
In pace deae
Ite in córdibus vestris,
Lorem dignum et alacer parte.
Et iterum conveniant velit. Benedictus."

Alyson opened the circle.

"Hecate, deam, hoc est summa virtus."

I really couldn't do well. I was a frustrating experience. I made one more Ring of Courage and my first Vorpal Sword amulet. I will add them to the website and perhaps I'll start making international sales. Guide me, Hecate. Guide me so I can grow.

The new year had come and gone for the young woman. In a few months it would be her birthday again. Alyson had gotten up from her bed and had prepared the shop for the day. Wiggling her wrist, she woke up her computer. To her surprise, she had an email. The email read:

"Dear Alyson Pratt,

This message has been sent to you on behalf of the NSS, the National Super Hero Society. The NSS is located in the United States of America. We are looking forward to creating international branches within the next decade. We have visited your website and have ordered a few of your products that have been distributed through out out Washington D.C. branch. It has been determined that your skills are genuine and we would like to extend an open invitation to you. The NSS would gladly accept you into it's ranks. Currently the offer would entail moving to an American branch of the society. If you choose to do so you will be able to choose to be a full time resident, with pay and benefits, or a part time hero with some pay. If you choose against this, we will extend the offer again when a branch opens near you.

Sincerely,
NSS President S. Jackson"

I had no idea how to respond to the email. The NSS had purchased my products and that was flattering. I was aware of people with special abilities far different from my own. I am human and you, Hecate, provide my power. Regardless, folks endowed with certain abilities has helped bring new customers into my shop.

I waited a half hour before responding. Nibbling on a snack, I decided to reply. I expressed that the offer was flattering, but that my business here would inhibit me from joining. My mind then rushed to the skull in the box. I sent the email and went to look at the things I needed in stock. As usual, the Enchantments had been selling and I was running low on my Nannie's remaining stock.

I opened my circle.

"Circulus apertus est, sed perpetua,
In pace deae
Ite in córdibus vestris,
Lorem dignum et alacer parte.
Et iterum conveniant velit. Benedictus."

I would start with five Courage Rings.

"Hecate, deam, hoc est summa virtus."

I made a few more Enchantments, but they weren't all that good. I do feel that I am getting better though. Hopefully I exceed soon. Hecate, in your name, I bless this book.

There was a knock at the back door of the Apothecary. Alyson was cleaning and moving things about. She felt that it was time to rearrange a bit. It was still early enough in the morning for her to be rather groggy and she had scooped up her old stuffed animal, George. Without realizing it was in her arms, she answered the door. Her mind was wandering and she made a mistake.

"Good morning, Santa!" She exclaimed as the door flew open. Beyond the door was not Hans, but rather Erik, the farmer.

"Good morning," He said with a strange nerve in his voice, "I sure hope I haven't gained enough weight to merit being called Santa," he said with a smile, "I haven't even got the facial hair."

Alyson blushed. Her face practically matched her hair. "I'm sorry, Erik, my mind was somewhere else. Would you please come in?"

Erik stepped into the shop. He had his package of herbs under one arm, keeping one arm behind his back. He looked to Alyson who was still holding George and he chuckled at it. She quickly set down the stuffed animal. Just then there was a chirping sound from behind his back.

"What was that?" Alyson asked.

Erik stopped where he was and placed the herbs on the counter. "Sadie and I thought you might be growing a little lonely, and it seems rather apparent. What with the Santa thing and all." He gestured to George. He then hesitated a bit, "Sadie and I made a deal with a local breeder and we picked you up a kitten." He then removed the kitten from behind his back. It was a small Serval. "I know these aren't cheap, it's a Serval, but it'll will be a good companion. We got it for a deal, so its no big deal."

Alyson's eyes widened, much as they would have when she was a child. She scooped up the kitten and thanked Erik greatly. He laughed and reminded her that he already received the herb payment. He reached into a messenger bag he was carrying and pulled out a massive ball of yarn.

"Remember to each her everything and keep her in line." Erik said, leaving the Apothecary.

Alyson thanked him again as the door slammed. "So you're a girl, she said to the cat. I think I'm going to call you Fievel. Fievel can be a girl's name. Fievel Meowscovits!" She patted the kitten's head before it tackled the yarn.

Maybe the kitten would provide inspiration.

I loved the kitten. Immediately after naming her, I set off on my daily Enchantments. Ten more, five of each.

"Circulus apertus est, sed perpetua,
In pace deae
Ite in córdibus vestris,
Lorem dignum et alacer parte.
Et iterum conveniant velit. Benedictus."

I opened the circle, lighting the candles in order.

Fievel worked! She was my good luck charm. I made two of each!

I played with Feivel and dealt with my daily customers. When I approached my Book of Shadows, it was already open and there was a new spell written in it. It was:

Warding Circle: The user sets up a ritual circle and can defend him or herself within the circle from all attacks. Incantation: "Hecate, dea, mortales tueri intra circulum. Liga nos lumen." The user can defend allies within the circle but cannot cast any other spells, the incantation must be sustained. Neutral.

Another neutral spell, but this one seemed to deal with battles. Will I be facing an enemy soon? Did you write this new spell in my book, Hecate?

Alyson was twenty years old. Her first birthday alone. Aside from herself, she spent the day with Fievel. Erik and Sadie visited and brought her food. Even Hans gave her some candy. Either way, she was alone.

At the counter she let her evening dwindle on the internet. It was horrifying how life sucking the internet was. Her Book of Shadows sat neatly next to her. It was tucked under the record book for the Apothecary. Her eyes grazed it and she got a thought. A few months ago, Hecate had added a spell to her book. She still hadn't tried it. Alyson grew antsy and opened the book.

It read: Warding Circle.

She got down from her seat and stepped in front of the counter. With her chalk and candles, she prepared her circle. Never having performed the skill before, she decided to attempt it.

(Out of Character: I'm so very sorry. For you guys reading, that last post should have been italicized. Thanks! I hope you're enjoying it ^.^)

After two failed incantations, it worked. I sat inside the casting circle as pink glowing light enveloped the circle. It was spherical and extended from the circle. I reached out to touch it. it vibrated and tickled my skin. I could not penetrate it.

I sat in the circle and watched Fievel attempt to enter. She couldn't. The poor cat cried. She didn't like the distance. I sang a song my Nannie used to sing to me. Fievel seemed to calm. I sat within the circle for over an hour. At one point the Apothecary clock rang eleven. Eleven was a disturbing hour.

I remained in the circle as the front door opened abruptly. I could have been certain it was locked at 9:30. I never kept the shop open past 9:30 unless requested or on the zenith of a moon phase. The open door welcomed an odd visitor.

"This is a place of business, is it?" Asked the visitor.

I agreed that it was.

He seemed so strange. He was well dressed. In fact, he wore a vintage looking suit. Possibly from the sixties. "You did not know Woodrow, you didn't?" He asked.

I agreed again. I was too entranced to question his question.

"You may call me Cold," Said the man. He stepped further into the light. I could see his eyes. He smiled widely. His perfect teeth were white and straight. His dark eyes seemed to burst from his face. Thyroid eyes, I pondered. He had triangular features and spoke in riddles.

"What do you want, Mr. Cold?" I asked. calmly, safe inside my bubble.

"We ask you, dear Alyson, to refrain from your magics."

I asked how he knew my name and he responded, "We know you well and we wish you to cease your indulgence in the occult."

I refused and he said, "Your Nannie will never know you as Strawberry."

"How do you know my Nannie?" I shouted.

"If it was not for that circle, I would silence you," Cold threatened. "We do not come in violence my sweet, sweet, Strawberry."

Tears began to pour down my cheeks. Nannie had said that to me, her final words.

"We see it. The skull you are hiding. Your Nannie wants us to have it." Cold said mechanically.

"I wont give anything to you," I cried.

Cold came close to the bubble and said. "We'll be back for it. I will see you in time."

Suddenly, he turned and left the Apothecary. The door closed and I dropped the spell. I ran to the door and locked it. When I glanced out of the window he was gone. Nothing, not even a car. I looked to the clock and it was 1 AM. 1 AM! What seemed to be a few minutes was two hours! Who was that man?

Guide me, Hecate.

Alyson had been taking good care of the store over the years since her grandmother's passing. She was Twenty-two now. The European economy had not been what everyone had expected. Times were hard on the girl, living alone with her big cat. She sighed as she waited on her new customers.

This night would be the first night of her weekly Witchcraft course. She had been talked into teaching my Erik and Sadie. She had five individuals signed up. Luckily for her they were all English speaking customers. The lessons were just over simple potions. She would do her best to conceal the real magic.

It went well, I thought. I was absolutely uncomfortable through the entire experience, but it went okay. I taught them all how to make Sleepy Tea. It wasn't much, but it was an income. Everyone seemed pleased too. That's probably why I couldn't resist. After teaching them the potion, and some simple herb preserving techniques, I gave in and decided to show them something neat.

I hunkered down and traced over my circle's lines on the floor. Over two years, I never fully erased the circle. The thought of Mr. Cold had frightened me and I felt safer with the circle still there. I placed my candles and sat within the circle. The students all gathered around and watched mr quietly.

I choked. Blushing, I asked if they'd be willing to let me try one more time. I knew that they would impressed if I had managed to show them something they might not be able to do themselves. It takes sacrifice to be a real witch, and I knew none of my students had the Wound. The Wound is not visible, but to a witch it is always apparent unless hidden by a glamour.

The group agreed and I tried one last time.

The spell just wouldn't work. I had to apologize. The students forgave me and I assured them that someday they might see it work. Maybe you wont let me show it off. Could it be possible that you gave me the spell to ward off Mr. Cold? Guide me, Hecate.

Alyson had her group back in the Apothecary. The learning had gone over well and she had been approached by the students. They were appreciative of her skills and begged her to try to cast the protection circle again. All of them were convinced she was the real deal and knew her magic was strong. She hesitated.

I wanted to, but I was nervous that I would not be able to perform for them again. I did my best to shrug it off and agreed.

I traced the circle and lit my candles. I shook a little.

It worked! I was surprised beyond recognition. My students all jumped back as the circle of light surrounded me. "Nothing can penetrate this barrier," I said, "In here, I am safe from all attacks. As long as i keep the field up, that is.

I'm glad it worked, though. And I'm glad Mr. Cold did not appear. Perhaps this skill can be used for more. Hecate, thank you.
