Even breath flowed fluidly from Rixil’s loosely open lips as he inaudibly awaited the arrival of an instigator. “If my memory serves me well, the time for the fellowship’s assemblage is almost at hand.” thought the Korulian to himself. He tossed the dates and times he had studied around once again, just to ensure his accuracy. There were four other figures featured in the castle’s furnishings, but he and his partner would be certain to sit at all of those places before the sunrise. Surely ALL of the assembly’s members couldn’t slip past the sentry process he was setting up.

Clicking broke the being’s concentration, the rhythmic reverberations soft and far between. The echoes bounced back and forth on the walls before growing more intense and unified as the source of said sounds approached.

Pulling Epoch back with a quick tug, Rixil placed the two of them further into the recess between the two columns where they resided. The time-traveler’s suit rubbed awkwardly against the material of his clothes in the confined space, but at least the occurrence didn’t create any unexpected noises. It dawned on the lizard-like adolescent milliseconds later that his invisibility illusions probably would have cloaked them effectively enough- but at the same time, part of him irrationally feared for the Human by his side.

Epoch had always been more a matter of study than companionship in his mind, but the earthling’s willingness to believe his every word was almost endearing. The situation had somehow begun to form new feelings in the otherwise self-centered Rixil. He almost dared to guess that he might have felt sorry for all the lies he had told thusfar, had he actually been closer with the blue-haired boy.

Conclusively though, his companion was not worth getting attached to, and he decidedly saw the earthling as the perfect tool for the perfect job.

As the guards approached, Epoch was swiftly tugged further into the darkness of the recess in which he and Rixil were hiding. He couldn't see the Korulian, but he could feel that his body was being pressed against Rixil's. It was nearly uncomfortable. Epoch followed this young reptile without warning. He was hungry for adventure and was brimming with new abilities. Yet now he was tucked up close to the reptile and, as he could hear Rixil's breathe, was pondering the question of Rixil's intent and his own decision of following the Korulian. Epoch was always quick to trust. Could that have been a weakness?

Two Korulian Knights clanged into the corridor visible from Rixil’s and Epoch’s vantage point. Their forms were almost ghostly in the pre-morning light, but the noise their ornate armor created as they moved made them very real, as well as the risk of them finding the two time-stowaways. Although the guards might not be able to see the youths tucked away in the stone inlet, the enhanced vibration detection orifices left bare on their necks could pick up bated breath as easily as a human might pick out the color red in a drab setting.

As the pair of patrolling passersby drew nearer to their hiding spot, Rixil stopped breathing all-together. He hoped that the human had enough sense to keep quiet, though he realized a little too late that he had neglected to describe thoroughly how his species senses worked. There was nothing he could do to alert his ally, but he figured that the repercussions would be faceable with a little more time-traveling. This conclusion came to the young Korulian as the threat was thwarted simply by remaining still, the guards going about their routine without skipping a beat. With their quick pace, the armored watchmen went to the end of the hallway’s length and then turned to travel a different down a passage. The concealed couple was left in their original silence, the echo of the intruding forces fading to faint footsteps, soon to be indistinguishable.

Once he was sure that they were gone, Rixil stepped out of the recess, gingerly pulling the person he was holding hands with after him into the clearing below the feathery god statue. Using the position of their intertwined digits, the Korulian gathered the position of his partner and stepped closer to Epoch, effortlessly avoiding the earthling’s feet with his own and leaning forward to whisper into the human’s ear.

“I say we make for the next deity. Shall we?” motioned the invisible individual, the gesture apparent only in the action of his arm movement as he gave a quick curtsey. And waiting not a second longer than Epoch’s response, he headed towards the end of the hallway, following the way of the watch-guards to the crossroad before taking a left, in the opposite direction of where the danger had gone. Dancing down the dark path forward, he made for the second deity’s dwelling place. Hopefully there, the two of them would stumble upon what, or who, they were looking for.

Their invisible forms floated through the empty corridor, gliding silently as the slowly fading stars falling from the sky. The points of light were solemnly vanishing into nothing, seeming to join the two in the cover of lost evening. The soft aura that had barely been present minutes ago now threatened to swallow the sapphire horizon… but the sun itself still seemed to be a ways off from fetching full morning’s light.

In no time at all, Rixil and Epoch stood to face their next point of interest: another stone carving depicting one of Korul’s deities. Where the previous statue had been beautiful and elegant, the sharp jagged tendrils of this god’s form menacingly reached out to the onlookers. Fingerlike, they seemed to beckon the Korulian and the time traveler towards them; and though Rixil felt that the thorns probably held the secret entrance he was hoping to find, there was no way that he was going to waltz into the rocky god’s embrace of death without knowing he would be able to go beyond the barbs unscathed.

This ominous statue in specific had always been under suspicious scrutiny by those who had been assigned to scour the castle for hidden chambers- However, no one had been able to confirm the premonitions. Ironically, they stood there now, the first beings to bend their minds around the puzzle in this particular timeline.

Epoch looked toward the statue. It was rather menacing. He was lead along by the lizard and was growing somewhat nervous. What could befall him at this new locale?

Rixil stole a glance to the left and right of the statue, looking for any sort of lever or button. There was nothing to be found. Although the place had been searched numerous times, the young Korulian couldn’t help but check again. “I wouldn’t consider the Queen’s henchmen to have as keen an eye as me… but even I’m baffled by this barricade.” mumbled the blonde inwardly, invisible eyebrows furrowed in thought.

As he stood there thinking, a soft pitter patter sound was sensed by the orifices on his neck. The sudden need to be hidden struck him again, but he decided not to be so forceful with his companion this time around. Quickly pulling himself closer to Epoch, he gave a hurried whisper.

“Get back, I hear someone coming this way.” Was all the alien could afford to let out as he slowly inched himself forward, the human responding by backing up at the same pace until they were both nestled into a crevice not far from the statue. They both held their breath as a soft shadow first encroached upon the stone not but feet away from where they were huddled.

The figure that followed was much different from the guards they had encountered previously. The dark form was mysteriously concealed in long, wizard-like robes with a hood that hid the Korulian’s face specifically. In the low light, the entire being seemed to be made of shadow as it floated past their hiding spot, up to the first thorns poking out from the statue. Ghostly white hands reached out from the confines of the long, billowing sleeves, out towards two symmetrical spikes. Index fingers presented, the specter-like stranger pricked the tips of each digit on the corresponding spines. A single drop of blood beaded on each finger in response, and the hooded figure gave a single sentence in Korulian tongue, whispering the words eerily. They were barely caught by Rixil, only thanks to his proximity to the person.

As quietly as the sentence has slithered out of the individual’s mouth, the barbs began to bloom outward, revealing more of the god’s stony form. The impression of the deity’s large, armored chest swung forward to offer a dark entryway. Quickly stepping inside, the cloaked conspirer crept into the darkness of the sarcophagus, disappearing completely as the door swung shut and the barbs bent back into place.

Epoch was getting used to being tugged to and fro. He was no jammed in another corner with his cold companion. Rixil didn't seem to give off as much heat as a human would have. Epoch shrugged that off as it being a lizard's metabolism.

Watching as the cloaked figure entered the newly opened corridor, Epoch was baffled. It didn't seem to be mechanically operated, and the entrance had not been obvious previously. He had heard of magic back on Earth, but he had never seen anything so powerful or efficient. If it weren't for Rixil, Epoch would have followed the hooded figure.

It could have been a mistake, but Epoch whispered, "What should we do now? Do we follow him? Was that one of our guys? Can you even use magic like that?" Epoch's questions tapered as he reminded himself that he should remain as quiet as possible. Hopefully, he would soon have no more need for hiding, it was becoming difficult to stay so still.

The young blonde alien wondered for a moment if following the foreigner would have been a better option. Although he had recognized the words passed and the magic used, there was no guarantee that replicating the offering would produce the same results.

“That was definitely one of the fellows we were meant to find. Ceous-Ideux-Riomet is undoubtedly addressing the dark deeds we must halt. The Korulian who just disappeared through that entryway utilized old magic that deals with promise words and blood offerings. I decided to give the vandal headway so that we might be able to sneak up on the whole of this operation.” Murmured Rixil as he slowly lead Epoch and himself towards the threatening thorns.

“I’m going to have to let go of your hand in order to open the concealed gate here.” He whispered backwards to his partner, releasing the grip on the other’s palm to lift his fingertips to the appropriate symmetrical spikes. “Feel free to grab hold of my cowl while I ‘work my magic’.” Said the Korulian, slyness in his tone masking the nervousness he held in his heart.
The digits about to be pricked by the points seemed to ache before they even made contact with the menacing spikes that beckoned his offering. Reciting the ritualistic rhetoric, he pushed his pointer fingers forward into the deity’s thorny tendrils.

Blood boiled forth from the fresh incision, amalgamating into orbs of invisible crimson right where the points had been pricked. The stone god seemed to rumble to life as its thorns flowered out again to reveal the doorway they had seen moments ago. Peering into the darkness, Rixil automatically saw the need for more of his skills; a use for his light constructs. He hurriedly closed his eyes, forming the construct in his mind before pulling his hands towards his center to manipulate the small amount of light around them.

Epoch watched for a few moments as Rixil was quiet. He had ahold of Rixil's cowl and felt the lizard shuffle a bit. He was about to ask Rixil what he was doing, but noticed the door out of his peripheral.

"No time, the door is closing." Epoch said, barking a whisper to his companion. Before Rixil could respond, Epoch pushed the reptile through the door. "Let's not waste any time, friend."

For the first time in ages, Rixil’s feet scuffed the floor as he was suddenly shoved into the closing blackness. The door swung shut, whisking away all of the light he had been trying to channel. Annoyance flared up inside of the reptilian being, automatic anger towards the situation apparent only in the way his tail swung back and forth agitatedly. He doubted that Epoch noticed in the absence of light, but part of him wished the human could see the rage that raked his features.

“I was attempting to form an object to light our path. And although I appreciate your concern for our operation, now we are stuck in a dark, foreign hallway with no means of traversing into the chambers depths without blindly clawing our way about. All the while, we must avoid the dubious desperadoes that are indisputably littering the place.” Whispered the alien harshly, maintaining a low level of volume. His words held less bite as he continued, calming himself as he regrettably requested aid. “It’s not easy to create constructs without photons nearby. If we wish to travel safely through these confines, our options are limited to the light sources we have on us. Do your energy blast produce any sort of illumination?”

The wrath he had felt previously had all but subsided. Rixil had come to the conclusion that the main reason he had felt it in the first place was the fact that his companion had ruined his self-held record of his footsteps being continuously concealed. “Oh, childish me…” murmured the adolescent to himself, in control of his feelings once again as he waited for a response.

Relieved to hear that the human could indeed assist his efforts, Rixil prepared his mind for the construct they would need to create in order to traverse the darkness. His eyes remained open on this occasion as he wasn’t about to miss the small window of time where the light would be utilizable.

There was only a moment’s pause before the stairway below their feet was suddenly illuminated by a bright blue glow which radiated from the small circular blast. The orb of energy was flung from Epoch's palm towards the stone wall, only having a few feet to travel before it would colide and disappear into the darkness.

The azure flash seemed to implode as the light was pulled quickly into Rixil’s palms.

Just as fast as it had appeared, it stretched into a sinuous, liquid-like structure that clung to the fingertips of the Korulian’s right hand. The form fell to the floor though, forming a lizard before landing on the stone with a splat. The creature of conjure was bright blue, like the blast it had been born from. Walls and floor were illuminated by the reptile’s glow, which was rather intense, despite its small size.

Eyes fixated on his creation, the larger reptilian being directed the creature’s movement, down the stairs into deeper darkness. “We’ll follow this fellow for a while.” Said the invisible Rixil as he stepped silently down the stairway.

Epoch agreed and kept close to Rixil. The two traveled down a rather long staircase that gradually led downward. The area was softly glowing by the light of the lizard. Epoch was surprised that the energy did not explode. He expected it to, and assumed that would destroy Rixil's construct. There was no sound, aside from the light breathing and footfalls.

After a few minutes, Epoch and Rixil came to a large opening.

The stairway led them to a large opening. As the lizard moved forward, even its light was not enough to touch the farthest walls. Instead, the illumination was caught by the smooth surface of columns that seemed to line the sides of the space. They led the eye to a dull orange glow that came from the opposite end of where they stood. Even Rixil squinted to make out the details beyond, but nothing was clear in the seemingly dusty darkness.

Out of habit, he turned to Epoch as he spoke… but was cut short when he noticed that Epoch was actually standing there, the lizard’s blue bioluminescence casting cobalt over the human’s spandex-covered form. Bewildered, Rixil stole a glance at himself, noting that he too had dropped out of his previous illusion. “That’s strange.”

“Does being visible render you useless?” scoffed Rixil inwardly. Although the reptilian being was unnerved by the faultiness of his illusions, his pride was instantly replaced by the knowledge that his skills were appreciated. Quickly reaching out his hand, he let his fingers graze the human’s suit as he lent his focus towards turning his comrade invisible again.

Darkness swirled in to cloak his target. But even as it happened, Rixil noted an oddity in his work. The glyph of light decorating his right arm remained a ghostly white color against his skin, rather than glowing pale yellow as it always had before. The alien’s suspicions were only confirmed when the mask of invisibility ripped itself from Epoch as suddenly as it had appeared.
Multiple causations flew through the alien’s head as he grasped for a reasonable explanation to his failure.

“I believe… we’ll have to remain visible from here.” Whispered Rixil. “I’ve read of people who have the ability to negate the skills of invisimancers such as myself. Though I have never encountered it before, it seems that we won’t be able to conceal ourselves. My previous statement still holds true no matter what the cause; waltzing in through the front door is not an option.”

Without the added element of stealth, the entire situation seemed a lot deadlier. Rixil had felt comfortable knowing that if things went wrong, he would most likely be able to escape with his light manipulation. With the ability taken away, his cool exterior threatened to fall as well.

Dark eyes looked feverishly left and right, in search of another way into the main chamber Rixil anticipated up ahead. Slivers of light beyond the columns and arches hinted at a set of stairs leading upward. The blue lizard still at their feet slithered towards the promising darkness, its creator following with faint footsteps. “There might be another way to sneak up on the cult. Follow me.”

Epoch and Rixil slowly followed the little blue lizard closely. It wasn't long until Epoch's nerves flared up. He felt safe, when concealed from the visible spectrum, but now he was uncertain. Blindly, he trusted the reptile, and now he questioned himself. What sort of power would they face? How soon would the two be caught?

Epoch's breath began to beat down hard and he caught it with a gulp. To calm himself from feeling naked, Epoch focused on the little lizard leading them, with a soft blue glow. It was wondrous. Seemingly alive, it slithered from side to side, shuffling its stem-like appendages. Unable to deny it, Epoch felt drawn to it slightly. The luminous creature was made of Epoch's own energy. Perhaps he was drawn to it because it was as if he had bore life to the lizard.

Abruptly, Rixil stopped, and Epoch nearly bumped into him. "We're getting close, aren't we?" Epoch asked.

Rixil was relieved to find that the staircase was indeed there, a yard or so into the darkness behind the columns and high-reaching arches. “Fortunate that I spotted it.” The reptile thought to himself, neglecting luck into his equation for success. Glancing away from the glowing lizard, he addressed his partner’s concerns in the quietest voice possible. “I can’t be certain… but the fact that my powers have proven to be useless in this area means we can assume that there is something going on in the room ahead.” Wanting to sound intelligent, he created rational for his motions thus far. “Luckily, the architecture down here is similar to that of the rest of the castle. These stairs will hopefully lead us to a balcony where we can sneak up on the CIR’s activity.”

With that, he allowed his construct to lead them up into further darkness. Rixil mimicked the smaller lizard’s movements somewhat, using all four of his appendages to ascend the staircase. Though heights did not bother him, falling from the floating flight of stairs would be too easy of a mistake to make. Without railings or sidings at all, the progress upwards was steady and silent.

As they reached the top, orange light spilt forth from the next area. Rixil let the lizard’s light fizzle back into the darkness, as he did not want to not draw attention to himself and his companion once inside. Turning back to Epoch, he placed a single finger to his lips. Said lips mouthed the word “Quiet,”, before their possessor proceeded to peek over the final set of stairs.

Beyond the balcony (that Rixil had anticipated would be there) stood a huge stone statue of the god they had offered blood to minutes ago. Though gargantuan in size, no detail was spared. Even from their distance, the intricate and life-like carving was notably beautiful. It might have been nice to admire up close, but before the feet of the sculpture hovered a mass of cloaked figures. They all looked the same from the back, though tails poked out from the bottom of some robes, hinting at the age of the Korulians concealed. Between the group and the god was an altar, bathed in flames that casted an auburn aura. The crackling of the fire was paired with deep chanting, ancient words not entirely foreign to Rixil.

Approaching the railed edge of the terrace, he leaned over to the human and whispered in his ear. “The distance between us and them is great enough so that we should be able to whisper without fear of being noticed.”

Epoch nodded in agreement. He looked out at the menacing statue. It looked old, but pristine. It was twisted and horrific. Nothing like what earthlings would have sculpted. Back home, every sculpture seemed based on mythology and human feats. Sure this was most likely mythological, but it was imposing. The auburn light shone and wrapped around the hooded figures.

"These our boys?" Epoch asked through the side of his mouth, still very taken in by the mass below. He surveyed the group and their quirky individualities. 1, 2, 3.... he counted in his head. "I'm not sure about you, or their abilities, but," Epoch sighed counting again, "I'm seeing about thirty of them. If they are anything like the Destroyer Droids back home, I could take about a dozen, maybe. What do you think?"

Looking down upon the crowd, Rixil was suddenly aware of his short-comings.

“To be honest, I’m probably not much of a fighter without my invisibility. My constructs can be useful, but they are most effective when I have the advantage of stealth.” Whispered the light manipulator sheepishly.

In reality, his main concern with attacking the cult below them was that he was curious about what they were planning on accomplishing. It was definitely enticing, the option of watching the prophecy he had studied for so long unfold before his eyes. Regretfully, he had to admit that it would be harder to stop the group once they had initiated anything.

The next problem arose: How would they get from their hiding spot on the balcony down to the event below without causing a commotion? As confident as he was, the young Korulian was not avid about jumping head first into a fight with half of his skills out of commission.

Before he could relay his concerns to his comrade, the chanting suddenly stopped. One of the tailed figures at the front of the assembly stepped up to the altar, gingerly removing the hood of the robes to reveal long, silvery blonde hair. It whipped around as the unmasked Korulian turned to face not only the rest of CIR, but also Rixil and Epoch. Though the alien didn’t take notice of them, its thin face was visible in the reflected light of the blazing fire.

Epoch was surprised at the admittance that Rixil lacked much of an arsenal. He was revved up. His nerves were strung out in this new world and he was itching for some real interaction. Maybe it was just the energy welling up in him, not being used. Over the previous few days Epoch had been using his newfound abilities quite rigorously and it could be possible that his cells were itching for release.

When the chanting stopped, Epoch and Rixil looked on as the cloaked figure who seemed to be the master of the lodge removed his hood, facing not only the crowd but Rixil and Epoch. Letting his jaw drop slack, Epoch was surprised. He had know true knowledge of Korulian physiology and differences, but the reptile down there looked strikingly similar to Rixil. "If I'm not mistaken, Rixil, I'd take that one to be your father."
